32° Masonic Learning Center Celebrates 10th Anniversary
Tuesday, March 18, 2008
This is a very special year for 32° Masonic Learning Center in Allentown , marking our 10 th year of operation. Thanks to the generous donations of the Valley of Allentown and Supreme Council, we have fulfilled our mission to provide the highest quality, state-of-the-art, multisensory reading and written language instruction to children with dyslexia, free of charge.
Since our opening in 1998, 119 children have received tutoring services at the Center. The children are accepted because they are reading well below their grade level and as a consequence are experiencing frustration, anxiety and self-doubt. After two or three years of specialized one-on-one tutoring, most children are reading at grade level and graduate from the program. As improved readers, they are more successful in school and have much higher self-esteem.
Parents are extremely grateful and often write letters of appreciation containing comments such as “… I wanted to relay my thanks to the Masons, teachers, and Director for all the help you have given my child. For many years, we have been frustrated, in tears, and angry at ourselves as parents because we felt we could do nothing to help our child and the struggles he faced... We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for giving our child a chance at a better life. He now looks at school differently, and likes to read and attend school…”
The Center has also trained 55 tutors in the art, science and practice of tutoring children using the Orton-Gillingham approach, also free of charge. These tutors have not only touched the lives of children here at the Masonic Learning Center , but they have also created a ripple effect throughout the community by carrying this approach back to their schools, clinics and/or private practices. As these trained tutors share their knowledge throughout the community, even more children will benefit. Ultimately, society reaps the rewards of well educated citizens. This incredible gift has all been made possible by the vision and continued support of the Masons.
For this special 10 th Anniversary, plans are underway to have a celebration at the Scottish Rite Center. A brunch will be held for all past and present
children, parents, tutors, staff and Board of Directors as well as all Masons from the Valley of Allentown . We have chosen the same date as our annual Walk for Dyslexia on October 12, 2008. We can combine a great party with an effort to help support our Learning Center for all the children who may need our services in the future. Without the kind and generous support of our families and friends, we would not be able to continue this successful outreach in the years to come. Mark your calendars now and save the date of October 12, 2008 and plan to join us for this celebration.
