Learning Center Student raises Funding
Thursday, September 2008
Nicholas has attended the Columbus Masonic Learning Center for one year. He doubted the success his lessons would have, but he quickly began to understand the impact that these tutoring sessions were having on his ability to learn, both during tutoring and at school. After a couple of weeks of working closely with his tutor, Nicholas “bought into” what his tutor and his parents were telling him.  He realized that he was a very bright young man ( age 8) but that he needed a different way of being taught to be successful. The Columbus Learning Center provided that scientifically supported educational approach for Nick. When end-of-the-year testing results were released, Nicholas had increased in his educational abilities in several areas of reading by 2 1/2 grade equivalencies. Nick's tutor, the learning center staff and Nick's parents are all elated with his success!

To show his appreciation for what the learning center is providing for him, on June 21 st , Nicholas and his sister, Lauren, conducted a Crayons® Tickled Pink Lemonade stand in front of their home in Dublin . Nick's mom, Debbie, helped with the construction of the lemonade stand and Nick decorated it himself. A lot of work went into this fundraising project (see pictures). The next week, Nick and his sister presented Mrs. Colner, L.C. Clinical Director and Mrs. Cokonougher, L.C. Administrative Director; with a brightly decorated (by Nick) package of money raised that day! What a wonderful surprise for Mrs. Colner and Mrs. Cokonougher!!

Nicholas is attending the learning center during the summer session and will return in September to complete his second year of intervention. Nick is also utilizing the Lexia software program once weekly for 20-minutes before his tutoring sessions. Nick and his family are committed to the learning center and believe strongly that it has given them new hope and encouragement.

Nicholas is only one of the great success stories at the Columbus Learning Center ! With 39 children attending tutoring sessions at the center this summer, we hope to be able to highlight some of our other children throughout the 2008-2009 academic year .
